Liverpool - General Information

Liverpool is a city in the northwest of England, located in the borough of Merseyside. The city lies on the side of the Mersey estuary west of Manchester, facing the Wirral peninsular.

It is the fifth biggest city in England with 447, 500 residents. Including the area sometimes known as Greater Merseyside, which includes the urban area on the Wirral and smaller closely towns such as St. Helens, the area has a population of 816, 000.

Liverpool is famous around the world; because of its docks which played such a big role in international trade; because of the internationally successful football team Liverpool FC; and because of the most popular band of all time The Beatles, who were born, grew up and played such a bit part in the Merseybeat sound which affected youth culture in the 1960s. Architecture is also a big draw to the city, as it has over 2500 listed buildings (more than any other city in the UK aside from London); included designs by architects such as Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, Peter Ellis and Norman Shaw. Liverpool also has the second most pieces of public sculpture in Britain and the waterfront has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Liverpool celebrated 800 years of existence in August 2007, and will be European Capital of Culture in 2008, something which is expected to bring many more tourists to the city.
